UTICA, NY – Students in the Family Nurse Practitioner and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner graduate programs at SUNY Polytechnic Institute (SUNY Poly) were celebrated on Friday, January 5 during a White Coat Ceremony in the Wildcat Field House. Approximately 90 students recently completed the instructional portion of their respective program, with the White Coat Ceremony marking the beginning of their clinical practice.

Speaking to the future healthcare professionals, as well as their friends and family in attendance, Interim Dean of the College of Health Sciences, Dr. Joanne Joseph, shared the history behind the treasured ‘White Coat’ tradition. She reflected on the ideals made famous by Pediatric Neurologist Dr. Arnold Gold and his wife Sandra, who strongly advocated for humanism to be infused back into westernized medicine.

“‘The Gold standard,’ so to speak, characterizes humanism and humanitarian care as having four distinct qualities: Compassion, collaboration, scientifically sound/evidence-based practice and equitable care (accessible to all regardless of color, creed or economic status). Each of these qualities are represented in the oath you are about to take,” said Joseph. “This charge, symbolized by the white coat, is admittedly a tall order to fill. That is why your profession, the profession of the healer, is so special and honorable. You make a difference in the lives of others and that is something you need to remember. You are all up to the challenge, and for this reason, we are exceptionally proud of you and grateful for the service you will be delivering now and in the future.” 

Interim Provost Dr. Andrew Russell, in his remarks, referenced the recent $44 million State investment in SUNY Poly. 

“The main reason the Governor was here, was to invest in us to invest in you,” said Russell. “The reason for that is because we need you desperately. We need new health care providers, at all levels. You will go on to care for me, my family, my children, your families and people around the State of New York and beyond. So it is with deep gratitude that I say thank you and congratulations.”
