SUNY Poly Alumna, Assistant Professor in the College of Health Sciences Named ‘Nurse Practitioner of the Year’ by The Nurse Practitioner Association New York State

ALBANY, NY – Janice Ceccucci, DNP, FNP-BC, a SUNY Polytechnic Institute (SUNY Poly) alumna and currently an assistant professor of the university’s College of Health Sciences has been named “Nurse Practitioner of the Year” by New York State’s only professional association of nurse practitioners.

“This is a great honor, both for Janice and for SUNY Poly,” said SUNY Poly’s Interim Provost Dr. Steven Schneider. “We are very proud to have her on our faculty and to represent the College of Health Sciences through these kinds of accomplishments.”

“Janice’s contributions to the entire SUNY Poly community are truly invaluable, especially because of the special dedication she has shown to those patients she has cared for throughout her career,” said SUNY Poly Professor and Interim Dean of the College of Health Sciences Dr. Kathleen Rourke. “The passion for nursing she instills in each of her students has always been evident, and I offer my sincerest congratulations.”

The 2009 SUNY Poly graduate, who specializes in forensic nursing to assist child victims of physical and sexual abuse, says she was honored to receive the annual award this month from The Nurse Practitioner Association New York State (NPA). “I think it’s great, and I think it’s a wonderful honor,” she humbly said. “I’m very thankful.”

An accelerated student, Janice simultaneously received her BSN and MSN from SUNY Poly in 2009 and later earned her doctorate in Nursing Practice from the State University of New York Medical University in 2016. She opened her own practice before partnering with Albany-based St. Peter’s Health Partners where she cares for patients throughout seven counties. Janice also works as a Nurse Practitioner (NP) at Saratoga Hospital’s emergency department and serves as co-director of the hospital’s Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship Program which aims to facilitate entry into practice for Advanced Practice Providers.

Janice honed in on her specialty in assisting child victims of assault at the start of her career when she noticed there seemed to be a lack of access to child assault-related care, and she felt a calling to the vocation to help fill that void.

Several unique academic pathways within SUNY Poly’s nursing program have been introduced in the past year, including the Upstate Accelerated Scholars Program (ASP) with SUNY Upstate Medical University, through which high school seniors interested in pursuing a doctoral medical degree may be simultaneously accepted to both SUNY Poly and SUNY Upstate with the benefit of having the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) waived. SUNY Poly also launched an online master’s degree program in Transformational Leadership in Nursing to complement an online baccalaureate nursing program that was implemented in fall 2018, among other exciting program opportunities.
