The struggle to catch the attention of a busy state or federal representative can be challenging for some wishing to have their voices heard, but for SUNY Poly alumnus Alexandra Bakiewicz, the opportunity to meet those who impact laws and higher education as part of SUNY Day DC was one which she will never forget.

Alexandra, who received her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in May 2019, was one of several SUNY students who joined lawmakers and SUNY leaders April 10, 2019, on Capitol Hill, to discuss several issues including ways to improve affordability and access to higher education, innovation and achievement.

SUNY leaders and elected officials in attendance at the event were SUNY Chancellor Kristina Johnson, SUNY Poly Interim President Dr. Grace Wang, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer and Rep. Anthony Brindisi.

“Listening to the speakers inspired me to help address issues students in New York face including affordable education, and finding lasting solutions to benefit all who seek a higher education,” she said.

She, along with other students at SUNY Day DC, was a participant in the SUNY Brockport Washington Internship Program at the time where she had an opportunity to gain experience in her field and develop a network of connections.

Her experience as an Engagement and Communications Intern at Atlas Corps opened the door for her to develop social media marketing campaigns, fundraising campaigns, graphic design skills and photography skills for events and organizations including the American Express Leadership Academy and Atlas Corps.

Following graduation, Alexandra became an Engagement and Communications Consultant for Atlas Corp. In the future, Alexandra looks forward to her continued service with the organization as a Selection Board Member.

“The opportunities I have received as a result of participating in the Brockport Washington DC Internship program are endless,” she said. “It has had a profound impact on me professionally and personally, providing me with an environment to grow in multiple ways.”

What advice does she have for those thinking of participating in the same internship program?

“I highly recommend this program as it can launch your career, create lasting relationships and give students room to grow into their own,” Alexandra said. “In life you only gain what you are willing to gain from a given experience, so enter life with an open mind and you will find your path.”
